Free Christmas Day travel on public transport

Yesterday’s meeting of the Sustainable Transport Committee of Greater Wellington Regional Council approved a proposal for passengers to travel free on Christmas Day on the Wellington region’s buses and trains.

In a press release from the GWRC, Sustainable Transport Committee Chair Cr Barbara Donaldson said she was “delighted” that the proposal from Chief Executive Greg Campbell for trains and buses to operate free all day on 25 December had been unanimously approved.

Ferry services do not run on Christmas Day, and will be replaced also by free bus services.

The release did not mention that Metlink also ran free services on Christmas Day last year, and in 2016, when Metlink showed extra generosity by lowering bus fares in the December weekends leading up to Christmas.
