On Sunday 21 July 2019, in the fog, cold, and wind, 16 people from Thankyou Payroll joined Garth Baker from Brooklyn Trail Builders on the top of Polhill Reserve, Te Aro to help restore the forest to the Polhill skyline.
Thankyou Payroll CEO Christina Bellis led the team for the second year, and the group included employees, family and friends. Rugged up for any weather, they came prepared with hot chocolate with chilies.
250 trees were planted over the course of the afternoon – rātā, cabbage trees, flax, and 5-finger plants. Rātā would have been the waving head-dress mentioned in the Te Reo name for the Brooklyn area – Turanga-rere, or “the waving plumes of a war party”.
Tree planting is one action that Thankyou Payroll has taken to actively address climate change and the negative impact of carbon emissions on the environment. 250 trees will, if they sustain growth, absorb 179 tonnes of carbon dioxide over their lifetime.
