Regional hockey teams start battling in Wellington this weekend

After kicking off last Sunday with matches around the country, the 2018 Ford National Hockey League continues in Wellington this weekend, carrying through until Sunday next week.

The tournament will involve nine days of play from New Zealand’s regional hockey teams facing off at the National Hockey Stadium in Newtown.

Wellington’s Ricoh Capital Cobras opened the men’s campaign with a convincing 5-0 win over John Turkington Forestry Central Mavericks in Wellington in the first round last Sunday.

Ricoh Capital Women were not so fortunate with their away game in Hawke’s Bay, remaining scoreless against John Turkington Forestry Central Mysticks in a 4-0 match.

The matches in Wellington will run from 10:00am to 9:00pm every day from Saturday 15 September to Sunday 23 September, with last year’s reigning champions Tiger Turf North Harbour (Men’s Challenge Shield) and Bayleys Midlands (Women’s K Cup) both needing to pick up the pace given their midway placings on the standings table.

Hockey New Zealand will once again provide a livestream of this years’ Ford NHL for fans who can’t make it to the National Hockey Stadium.

The Women’s K Cup Final and the Men’s Challenge Shield Final, and the respective bronze medal games will be streamed live simultaneously on the Hockey New Zealand Facebook page and in full high definition on YouTube.
