Reserve Bank building evacuated for asbestos removal

There will be a planned evacuation today from the Reserve Bank building on the corner of The Terrace and Bowen Street so that job of removing asbestos can begin next week.

The building houses public service staff from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, State Services Commission and other organisations, including Defence staff relocated after their building was evacuated after the Kaikoura earthquake.

Asbestos was found in the building’s skirting in May. The building was evacuated at that time, but reoccupied after the asbestos was found to be confined to the skirting, and had not been disturbed.

An announcement from the Bank is expected later today about how long the building will be closed.
