The New Zealand International Film Festival has made a late addition to its programme: the classic 1987 concert film Sign O’ the Times, directed by and starring the late musical genius Prince.
The film had its New Zealand debut at the Auckland Film Festival in 1988 but has long been unavailable here because of conflict over musical rights (you couldn’t even get it on DVD or BluRay, though for some reason these were available in Australia).
Music rights have just been cleared, and the 85-minute film will have one screening, at the Embassy Theatre on Tuesday 14 August, from 8:30pm.
The film was mainly shot at Prince’s Paisley Park studio, after footage and audio from the European tour of the double album from which the title is drawn was deemed largely unusable. It features 11 songs from the album (including the music video for ‘U Got the Look’), along with a version of ‘Little Red Corvette’ and Charlie Parker’s ‘Now’s the Time’, featuring a drum solo from Sheila E.
