It’s not paranormal, just police training

If you’re passing Parliament this evening and see police all over the Beehive do not be alarmed. It’s not emergency – or paranormal – activity.

New local mockumentary comedy series Wellington Paranormal debuts tonight on TVNZ 2.

Based on events and characters from Taiki Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows, it features the deadpan police officers from that movie, Minogue and O’Leary (played by Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary) working for commanding officer Sergeant Maaka (Maaka Pohatu) in Wellington Police’s small Paranormal unit, dealing with supernatural crime.

If you don’t mind spoilers, you can read a review of the first episode on The Spinoff here.

And in a nice piece of synchronisation, NZ Police will be undertaking a training exercise at Parliament this evening.

It will involve officers rappelling (or abseiling) down the side of the Beehive, an activity that could cause alarm to members of the public who may see this happening from 6:00pm onwards.

Police advise that this is a routine training exercise and not an emergency event.

Or paranormal.
