How to spend a rainy day in Wellington

You can’t beat Wellington on a good day – the old saying goes – so what do you do when the weather doesn’t play along? Time to chuck on your gumboots and get out there.

Go op shopping

Op shopping is great for discovering something interesting or just finding a bargain. There are well-known shops in the central city around Cuba Street, but if you feel like heading further afield, there are many Op Shops in the region. Save-Mart has stores in Porirua, Levin and Upper Hutt, and there are Salvation Army stores throughout Wellington’s surrounding suburbs.  The Newtown area is another great place to grab a bargain, and is just a bus ride away from the city.

Go climbing

If you like rock climbing or just feel like doing something physical, head down to Fergs Climbing wall. Located right on Wellington’s waterfront, Fergs Climbing is open to all experience levels, and offers student discounts. It’s a great place to burn off some energy and bring out your inner Alex Honnold.

Go to Pataka

Porirua’s hidden gem, Pataka Art + Museum is a municipal museum and art gallery of Porirua dedicated to celebrating New Zealand’s heritage & showcasing Maori, Pacific Island, New Zealand and international art & culture. It changes exhibitions every 3 weeks, so is always chock-full of interesting pieces.

Go to Wellington Chocolate Factory

It’s open to the public every day and you can visit and immerse yourself in chocolate (possibly literally? The team are very accommodating…). Pop in and drink your fill, or book a tour and learn more about our process of how cocoa is grown and turned into premium chocolate. Oh –  and, of course, there’s a full tasting at the tour’s end!

Go to the SPCA

Based in Newtown the SPCA is the Wellington animal rescue and rehab center and holds their adoption and veterinary center. SPCA is open daily between 10am and 4pm. You can go to visit the puppies and kittens and even if you don’t plan on adopting – the little ones love the socialisation and the company.

Go to Escape Mate

Be smart, bold and have fun. Gather your friends and family for this 90-minute indoor challenging game, where everyone will have to work together to complete a mission, which involves the ancient temple of a long-lost civilisation or exploring the ‘SPACESHIP’, which is signalling the armada for an impending invasion. Time is of the essence, so choose your team members well!

Go to the Weta Cave

Check out the Weta Cave for all things Lord of the Rings and more. There are life-size models and artifacts and you can take some selfies if that floats your boat. Hands on workshops are also available so let your imagination run wild!
