Campaign against hygiene poverty launched today

A new initiative is asking the public to donate toiletry and hygiene products for people in need.

A battle against hygiene poverty was launched today by Wellington blogger and policy advisor Lucy Revill.

Soap For Society, in partnership with Wellington City Mission, Accor Hotels, Arriba PR and La Chapardeuse illustrator Maureen, will collect beauty and toiletry products from the Wellington community to help people in need.

Many New Zealanders do not have the money to buy basic toiletries, let alone luxuries. The goal of Soap For Society is to collect enough products for 1000 families, and raise $1000 for Wellington City Mission, in 10 days.

Revill, author of popular Wellington blog The Residents, was motivated to tackle the problem when she considered the amount of product samples from beauty companies that were being sent to her, and how many people don’t have enough soap, deodorant or shampoo to feel like they can be clean and accepted by society.

“Cleanliness is a matter of personal dignity and we think that everyone has a right to feel sanitary, safe and clean.

Wellington City Mission have expressed a particular need for sanitary items, razors, shaving foam, deodorants, shampoo and conditioner, body wash and toothpaste. Other items such as combs, hairbands, face wipes, sunscreen and lipsticks are also welcome.

Hotel products or miniatures are encouraged; these are smaller and lighter and can be carried around if a person doesn’t have a home.

Nail polish, nail polish remover or perfume should not be donated, as these are solvents.

Products need to be unopened, to comply with health and safety rules, and should be boxed and labelled ‘Soap and Society’ on each side.

Donated hygiene products can be dropped off until 30 July at:

Wellington City Mission, 19 Gordon Place, Newtown (9:00am to 3:30pm Monday to Thursday, and 10:30am to 3:30pm Friday);

Wellington City Mission inner city office, corner of Taranaki and Abel Smith Streets ( 9:00am to 5:00pm weekdays or 10:00am to 4:00pm Saturdays; or

Sable Fine Hair, 109 Featherston Street, Lambton Quay (9:00am to 5:00pm, Tuesday to Saturday).

Donations of money can also be made to Wellington City Mission:
