Five things happening outside the city this weekend!

Kiwi Night Encounter

Ngā Manu Nature Reserve, 74 Ngā Manu Reserve Road, Waikanae, Kapiti Coast

This is your chance to share in the night world of kiwi. Watch our birds as they emerge from their daytime slumber and engage in the nocturnal exploration of their outdoor enclosure. Every evening presents a new episode in the lives of our birds!

Our encounter starts with a kiwi presentation in our Visitor Centre. Your guide will then escort you to our outdoor kiwi enclosure where you will take your seat in our covered observation area. For the following 30 to 40 minutes you will be captivated by the birds behaviour, before returning to the Visitor Centre to enjoy a hot drink and have a chat about what we’ve seen.

Tickets for our 1 and a half hour close-encounter experience will be limited to 10 people per session.
Call 04 2934131 to book—pay on arrival.

Start time will seasonally adjust with sunset and will be confirmed at the time of your booking.
– There is a $5 Discount off tickets for our Friends of Ngā Manu—find out about becoming a Friend of Ngā Manu by visiting the ‘Support Us’ section of our website.
– For the wellbeing of our birds and the enjoyment of other guests—everyone will be asked to observe silence whilst in the kiwi enclosure.
– This experience is not recommended for children under 7 years.
– No photography is permitted as this startles the kiwi and spoils the experience for others.

We Mavericks

Wellington Bluegrass Society, Peel Place, 54 Richmond Street, Petone, Lower Hutt, Wellington Region

Come and find out why they’ve been winning hearts across the ditch, Friday 1st November, 8pm.

They’re bringing hooky originals, strange stories and incredible energy:
Martin’s masterful strings and vocals meets kiwi Vigenser’s incredibly captivating voice and driving rhythms. With their genre-less, powerful songs, they never fail to entertain.

This duo finally returns to NZ where they met as accompanists, never expecting to step up and take the stage together a few years later. After a handful of originals-based performances throughout Australia in 2018, audiences gave them no choice but to continue. They have had a steep and fast rise to AU festival stages and numerous shows, and have no plan to slow down.

Musical twins and mavericks besides, they will have you laughing, crying, and everything in between.

Space is limited, book now! Secure your seat at bluegrass(at)

“The pair provide a rich soundscape… which carries the audience in anticipation of the next sublime moment.” – Tim Fisher, Artistic Director Nanga Music Festival WA

“…intelligent and achingly beautiful lyrics… all lovingly wrapped in exquisite mandolin and fiddle accompaniment.” – Dallas De Brabander, Skinkworld Concerts NSW

“An energetic and captivating stage performance that is filled with emotive and down-to-earth songs.” – Chris “Albi” Dent, NZ Best Folk Album

“These (original songs) are beautiful, complex and so overdue being brought to audiences…” – Finn McLennan-Elliot, Programme Director Auckland Folk Festival NZ
