Glowing reception for inaugural Matariki event

Wellington families made the most of a still, chill night on Friday to enjoy the Ahi Kā and OneOne events for Matariki on the waterfront.

Thousands of Wellingtonians thronged the waterfront around Taranaki Wharf after dusk on Friday evening to enjoy the first of what is planned to become an annual family-friendly event as part of the city’s Matariki celebrations.

A number of fires were lit on the Whairepo Lagoon for the Ahi Kā event, after the opening Nga Wai Piāta (Streams of Light) procession of school children in glowing masks and costumes.

Māori performers and storytellers and illuminated stilt-walkers entertained the crowds around Whairepo Lagoon and Odlins Plaza, while the art and dance installation OneOne screened on the promenade at Te Papa.
