Don’t phone or text when driving

It seems obvious, but unless you want to get ticketed, keep off your phone when you are behind the wheel of a vehicle.

During a Wellington Road Policing team operation last Wednesday, 15 August, drivers using mobile phones were targeted.

The operation from 4:00pm to 5:00pm on Hutt Road, Petone, resulted in 18 drivers being issued infringements for using their phones. A further 17 were issued infringements for not wearing seatbelts.

Wellington Road Policing Senior Sergeant Simon de Wit said the number of infringements issued was disappointing.

“It shows that drivers are still willing to take unnecessary risks on our roads,” he said.

“There are a lot of other distractions while driving, but drivers using mobile phones has become a significant problem.”

Police advise drivers to turn their phone off while driving, or put it on silent, to reduce the temptation to read text messages or answer phone calls.
