Don’t feed the kākā

An ecological message to be sung to the tune of Don’t Feed the Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult. Cowbell optional.

Mating time is here
Kākā start to pair
People, don’t feed the kākā
Not in the wind, the sun or the rain (they can’t be like we are)
Come on baby, don’t feed the kākā
Baby take my hand, don’t feed the kākā
They’ll be able to fly, don’t feed the kākā
Baby, that’s the plan
In Well-ing-ton, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la…

(guitar riffs)

Bone disease is wrong
Kākā chicks are gone
Feeding those nuts to kākā
Imbalances their diet: Ree! (kākā don’t need nuts, no)
With several hundred Kākā feeding everyday (don’t feed the kākā)
They really don’t need nuts from humans no no way (natural feeding)
Regurgitating for their chicks everyday (can’t be like we are)
Help those babies, well-meaning people
Grow some plants (don’t feed the kākā)
They’ll be able to fly, don’t feed the kākā,
Baby, that’s the plan
In Well-ing-ton, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la

(guitar riffs)

Kākā friendly plants
That’s the friendly stance
Kowhai, five-finger, fuchsia
It’s the planting that helps them go on
The door is open and the breeding free –
of metabolic bone disease
No metabolic bone disease (don’t be afraid)
Come on kākā (and they have no fear)
We ran to them (then they started to fly)
They looked backward and said goodbye (we could become like they are)
They rejected our nuts (we could become like they are)
Come on baby, don’t feed the kākā….

(guitars etc)

Please don’t feed kākā as they are starting to pair up at this time of year and will soon be starting families. To ensure kākā chicks are healthy their parents need to eat a natural diet.  For healthy kākā chicks in Wellington, their parents need to eat a natural diet. Plant kākā friendly plants, such as kowhai, five-finger and tree fuchsia, if you want to attract them to your garden.
