CubaDupa looking for next year’s performers and ideas

CubaDupa has just announced their dates for the 2020 festival along with the opening of Expressions of Interest / Artist Applications. The last weekend of summer will see CubaDupa return to the streets for the most vibrant and creative event on the calendar.

CubaDupa has recently appointed a new Festival Director, Gerry Paul, who has been on the programming team for the past four years. Gerry is an award winning musician and songwriter who has played music at over 500 festivals in over thirty countries and co-founded Coastella Music Festival and NZ Irish Fest as well as programming the music for many Wellington events including Beers at the Basin, Beervana, Wellington Wine & Food and Budburst.

Gerry says the team are particularly interested in increasing the numbers of interactive performances, installations and creative technology projects at CubaDupa 2020 and are looking for ideas that provide unique experiences for audiences and performers.

“As well as continuing to take the lead with projects involving mass music (think brass, percussionists – and lots of them!), we are encouraging artists to come up with innovative ideas that engage and encourage participation and lead to deeper connections within the festival – particularly ones that respond to the unique Cuba St environment”.

The vision for CubaDupa is to celebrate the epic creativity of the Cuba precinct and wider Wellington creative community and the festival has become synonymous with colour, character, costume and a weekend at which Wellingtonians feel free to bring out their wild side.

With previous programmes including street theatre, dance, roaming performances, family entertainment, musical genres from Opera to Te Reo Trash Metal, Second Line Brass to Balkan beats, indie rock to post punk and dozens of parades, as well as installations like the colourful umbrellas at the Abel Smith and Cuba St intersection in 2018 – the festival has become a creative playground that blurs the line between the audience and performer.
