Investigation continues into murder of 71-year-old in Petone

Police are continuing their investigation into the homicide of a 71-year-old man in Petone on Friday.

Detective Inspector Shane Cotter said that Police were called to a Jackson Street address around 9.50pm on Friday, where a 71-year-old man was found dead.

Examination of the scene was continued today, and Petone residents will notice an increased police presence in the area over the coming days.

Formal identification of the man will take place during a post-mortem examination on Monday.

Police and Victim Support continue to provide support to the victim’s family at this difficult time, and have thanked the residents of the area, who have looked out for one another and have been assisting with inquiries.

A 41-year-old man was arrested yesterday on unrelated matters and appeared in the Lower Hutt District Court on charges relating to wilful damage and drug possession. He was remanded in custody.

Police are still looking to speak with any witnesses to the incident and also anyone who may have information that could assisted with the ongoing inquiries.
