Whales back in Wellington

Southern Right whales can’t seem to keep away from Wellington.

What is believed to be a Southern Right whale mother and calf were sighted in Wellington harbour yesterday, with another pair may possibly spotted on the Kapiti coast.

The Department of Conservation has not been able to determine if they are “known” whales – recognisable regular visitors to the region from the population of around 2,500 inhabiting New Zealand waters.

DOC has asked people to keep at least 200 metres away from the whale and calf in the harbour, rather than the usual 50 metre distance, and to not fly any drones closer than 150 metres.
