Metlink have advised that buses will replace most train services over Labour Weekend, from Saturday 20 until Monday 22 October, to allow major engineering work to take place.
The majority of maintenance and upgrade work takes place at night or during weekends to avoid disrupting the thousands of passengers commuting in and out of Wellington on weekdays.
Major engineering work, such as replacing tracks or upgrading signalling systems, may require closure of a line or section of line for longer than 48 hours to complete the upgrade work efficiently and safely. These larger scale works take advantage of the public holiday weekends such as Labour Weekend.
This weekend, Johnsonville Line services will be replaced by buses between Wellington and Johnsonville. Kapiti Line services will be replaced by buses between Wellington and Porirua. Wairarapa Line services will be replaced by buses between Wellington and Upper Hutt. Hutt Valley Line services will be replaced by bus between Wellington and Upper Hutt
On Sunday 21 October the Wellington Phoenix are playing against the Newcastle Jets. Bus replacements will be in operations for this events and buses will depart from the bus station beside Platform 9 following the finish of the game.
Metlink advises that bus replacements are not tracked via real time information when they replace trains, and that cycles other than folding cycles, will not be carried on the buses replacing trains. All folded prams can be carried on board the bus replacement services when stored in the luggage areas, but non-foldable prams may not be able to
