NZSO partners with City Mission for Christmas

As part of a new partnership with The Wellington City Mission, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is supporting the charity’s annual Christmas Star Appeal.

At the NZSO’s two concerts in December –  Christmas Brass and Messiah – audience members can donate food or funds at the concerts to City Mission volunteers.

“We’re delighted that our collectors can be at the Orchestra’s Christmas concerts for donations that will make a big difference for those in need at this time of year,” says Wellington City Missioner Murray Edridge.

The Christmas Brass concert at Cathedral of St Paul on Friday 7 December from 6.30pm is a family friendly event which will see the Orchestra’s brass section taking centre stage under the baton of renowned American conductor and trumpeter Brian Buerkle to perform popular Christmas classics, including O Magnum Mysterium, The Little Drummer Boy, Winter Wonderland and Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

The following night from 7.30pm at the Michael Fowler Centre, the NZSO presents festive favourite Messiah, conducted by Englishman Nicholas McGegan, a world authority on Handel. He will be joined by some of the best vocalists in Australasia – soprano Madeleine Pierard, alto Kristin Darragh, tenor James Egglestone and bass Martin Snell – alongside specialist early choral group The Tudor Consort.

This will be the seventh year in a row that the NZSO has performed the hugely popular oratorio in Wellington.

A City Mission Star featuring the NZSO was placed on Wellington’s waterfront in October as part of the launch of the Christmas Star Appeal. It is one of the stars in the Walk of Fame campaign, that will decorate the waterfront during December.
