Nearly 200 competitors from across the country attended the first year of the McArthur Ridge Run in Central Otago. Our friends at The Central App have suggested that Wellington App users may want to head south to give the run a go in February 2019.

Online registrations are now open for the second McArthur Ridge Run on Saturday 2 February 2019.
Set amongst the vines of the McArthur Ridge vineyard, the 5km, 10km or half marathon distances go through the McArthur Ridge Vineyard. Participants can run or walk their way through the vines and around the vineyard estate while experiencing picturesque views of Central Otago under the popular Leaning Rock, and finishing where competitors started with a festival atmosphere of stalls, food, wine and beer tasting.
The response to last year’s event, with many competitors pledging to return with friends, have given organisers Camille and Shayne O’Connor of Perspective Personal Solutions confidence that registrations will be busy this time around as well.
The event has been designed to encourage everyone to give it a go, from those wishing to walk or run the 5km or 10km event, to those planning on completing a half-marathon.
This year, a new event – the 20km Team Relay – will see teams of either two or four people running the 5km loop and the 21km run. They will be sent off in waves, so everyone finishes around the same time, creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere at the finish line.
While there will be prizes for place getters in each category, a number of prizes mean everyone has a chance to receive gifts from the event sponsors.
”We are about supporting and giving back to the community we love,” said Shayne O’Connor.
“So this year, along with McArthur Ridge Vineyard, we have decided that some of the proceeds from the event will go back into the community to support local charities and projects.”
This year’s event was described as relaxed and family friendly, and the intend to repeat this in 2019, but on a bigger scale.
“There will be food and beverage tents, kids entertainment and music to create a festival atmosphere for the supporters, families and competitors,” said Camille.
To encourage people to make a complete day out in Central Otago, each competitor in the McArthur Ridge Run the vines event (excluding juniors) will also receive entry to the Central Otago Craft Beer Festival, which will be held in Pioneer Park in Alexandra, also on 2 February, from 2:00 to 8:00pm.
Online Registrations are now open for the event. For pricing information and to register, see the Run the Vines section on The Central App, downloadable for iOS and Android.
